Keki's fusion
Size: 3000x6000mm
Medium: Weathered Steel
Location: Manor Royal, Gatwick, Crawley, West Sussex

Created with Cake Industries.

Keki’s Fusion is a six-metre-high public sculpture conceived as both a personal memorial and a civic landmark, integrating narrative, infrastructure and place-making. Positioned within the Manor Royal “Superhub” near Gatwick airport– a pioneering transport and micro-park environment – the work responds directly to its setting, transforming a former utilitarian site into a distinctive and meaningful public space.

The concept draws on the historic Rediffusion logo, referencing the industrial heritage of Manor Royal while forming a deeply personal tribute to the artist’s father, Keki Singporewala, who worked locally from the 1970-90s. This fusion of memory and collective history explores themes of fatherhood, legacy and the invisible “gravity” of generational migration influencing decisions across time. Elevated on tripod “piston” legs, the sculpture evokes engineering and science, aligning with the area’s links to aviation and technological innovation.

The realisation demonstrates technical and material excellence through collaboration with Cake Industries, whose integrated engineering and fabrication ensured precision, durability and craft at scale. The resulting 6m-high stellated pentakis icosidodecahedron, weighing three tonnes, resolves complex geometry into a robust weathering steel structure capable of long-term public exposure while maintaining clarity of form.

In impact, Keki’s Fusion advances contemporary public sculpture by merging autobiographical narrative with infrastructure-led placemaking. It is integral to a wider urban strategy where art, landscape and transport coalesce; its removal would significantly diminish the site’s identity.

The work has generated strong public engagement, acting as a focal point within the Superhub. By elevating everyday infrastructure into a space of reflection, identity and visual delight, it delivers clear wider benefits—enhancing both the physical environment and social experience.

The title of sculpture is a play on the Rediffusion name, whilst referencing the artist’s fathers Zoroastrian name, Keki, which also translates in Japanese to the word ‘Cake’ evoking the strong collaborative/fusion between the artist and fabrication team.
